A Mediterranean Diet - How to Lose Weight Safely

Sunday, April 6th, 2008

By Ray Darken If you are looking for a way to lose fifteen pounds in two weeks, a high protein diet, a low carb diet, a fruit diet, a no fat diet, a blood type diet, a juice fast, a diet named after a place in Miami, a grapefruit diet, a cactus diet, a coffee and cigarette diet, a diet that includes sweets, a diet based on your body type, a diet based on an ancient religion or a diet based on your hair color, then this article is NOT for you. Fad and crash diets, such as the ones described above are not only unhealthy but they also cause rebound weight gain. Also most diets, even though diet gurus write them, cause an initial weight loss but the ultimate result is that you gain all of the weight back the minute you go off the plan. If you don’t gain it back within a couple of diets, you are likely to gain it all back plus a bit more within a year. Crash diets dehydrate you, low calorie diets put your body into starvation mode so you plateau so you can’t lose one more pound and high protein diets stress your kidneys and clog your arteries. So how does one lose weight? There is only one answer to this question. You need to expend more calories than you are taking in. Restricting certain foods, eating so-called fat burning foods, or dehydrating yourself with special pills or teas does not do it. It is simple math. The only way is to eat a little less and exercise a little more. Here is the equation below: Eating Less + Exercising More = Weight Loss. This is not a magical formula, it is just logic. It is also not a fast way to lose weight. As I have mentioned before, this is not an article about how to lose ten pounds in three days or 30 pounds in a month. It is about safe, healthy weight loss. In order to lose weight safely and without putting yourself at risk for such health hazards as dehydration, kidney failure, malnutrition, exhaustion, nervous dysfunction, tooth loss, dull hair, wrinkles, cellulite, sudden heart failure or stroke and lose the weight so that it stays off, you should lose no more than approximately two pounds a week! Although that might not sound like a large amount of weight to lose it actually is! If you lose 2 pounds a week that means you can achieve a weight loss of ten pounds a month! If you only have twenty pounds to lose then your weight loss is not only quite rapid, but you have the extra guarantee that it will stay off because you have followed a sensible exercise plan that did not involve starving, exhausting or depriving yourself. If you are willing to drop your impatience and desire for immediate gratification and stick to an exercise plan and healthy eating habits, then a Mediterranean Diet is for you. Remember being slim is only good if you are able to enjoy it! Do You Need to Lose Weight? Fascination with Fat If you want to lose weight, you first need to assess whether you need to actually lose weight or are simply a fashion victim. Unfortunately this society is fascinated with fat - who has it and who doesn’t. As we are persuaded by so many images in the media that persuade us to believe that you can never be too thin, many of us are bad judges of our actual body weight. If you are under the age of eighteen and reading this book, the first thing you need to do is consult with your parent about your plans to lose weight. Have her make an appointment with a physician so that he can indicate to you whether or not you are a candidate for weight loss. If you are an adult, it is possible that you may not be overweight and are just trying to be, as Bridget Jones put it in Bridget Jones Diary “a stick insect with eyelashes.” It is also very possible that you know you need to lose weight but have no idea where to start. If you are obese and you know it, then you have to check with a physician first to see how your health is before you embark on any exercise program or plan. The same is also true if you have any kind of medical condition but especially a thyroid condition or heart condition. Some physicians may not recommend a weight loss program for those who are over 40 as due to genetics and hormonal changes some people naturally just round out or gain weight in a way that simply cannot be changed. If your doctor tells you your spreading hips are due to menopause or genetics, believe him! It is not clever to fool with Mother Nature. uthor Ray Darken - Ray often writes for and works with The Mediterranean Diet. Interested in Botanical Crohns Relief?

Saturday, April 5th, 2008

By Sharon Dobson Botanical crohns treatment is often used as an alternative or complimentary treatment to medications. Since ancient times, plants have been used for their healing properties. However, not all plants provide the same relief or can be used as a remedy for any health problem. With that in mind, the following are the botanical treatments most used by Crohns sufferers for relief of symptoms. Aloe Vera Juice aloe vera juice, which comes from the aloe vera plant, has natural healing abilities and also acts as a detoxifier. Aloe vera juice is ingested and works to gently and thoroughly cleanse the bowel. The juice goes through the intestinal tract and works to break apart food residues that are impacted within the intestines. Aloe vera juice is a good botanical crohns remedy because it helps to alleviate constipation, prevents recurrent diarrhea, reduces bloating and discomfort, and promotes regular bowel movements. It is considered a safe treatment to use for those who monitor their diets, and can be used for the long term. It has no known negative side effects. Slippery Elm Bark slippery elm bark comes from the slippery elm tree, and can be dried and ground into a powder or ground into gruel. It is usually made into a tea or added to porridge. It is considered an effective herb for soothing the entire digestive tract. This is because the bark has anti-inflammatory properties as one of its ingredients is mucilage, which resists digestion and hydrolysis via enzymes and stomach acids. Therefore, slippery elm bark sooths the digestive system and also acts as an antioxidant. It helps the body recover its vital hormone balance that is needed to maintain basic health. It is considered safe, but should be ingested with plenty of water to prevent an impacted bowel situation from occurring (difficulty passing dry hardened feces from the bowel). Chamomile Chamomile is a flower and can be used for botanical crohns relief. It is often dried and prepared in a tea. It helps to aid in digestion, and has sedative properties. Moreover, chamomile can alleviate gastrointestinal spasms and other common symptoms associated with inflammatory diseases that affect the gastrointestinal track such as Crohns disease. This is because Chamomile works as an anti-inflammatory agent. Chamomile is considered safe, but should not be taken by a person who has an allergy to any flower in the daisy family. Peppermint Peppermint is a plant, and its leaves are often dried and used in the form of tea as an herbal remedy. Peppermint has been used for centuries to treat common digestive problems such as reducing gas production within the intestines. However, another way of taking peppermint is peppermint oil (oil that has been infused with peppermint properties which it takes from the leaves). Studies have found that peppermint oil in coated capsules is exceptionally effective for relieving painful symptoms, distention and frequent bowel movement for those who suffer from Irritable bowel syndrome. Crohns sufferers may also receive the same relief, but more information is needed to see how effective peppermint oil would be as a botanical Crohns treatment. Peppermint tea is considered safe, but peppermint oil can have adverse side effects such as a burning sensation in the stomach or rectum if not taken as advised. All of these herbs can be found in local herbal and health stores. You should read and follow the instructions as directed on the bottle. In addition, keep in mind that you should exercise caution if you are using botanical remedies as a form of crohns disease treatment. Although the herbs may indeed provide you some relief of your symptoms, herbs have not been regulated to the same degree as medications, nor has their effectiveness for treating Crohns Disease been thoroughly studied. Furthermore, if you are taking medications to treat your condition, be advised that some herbal remedies may interact with certain medications and not be compatible. Thus, its a good idea for you to first speak to your doctor about botanical crohns treatments if you plan on taking them, especially if you are already using medication. Grace

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

By Anthony Smith Grace. What is Grace? (1.) Of form or person. (2.) Favor, kindness, friendship. (3.) God’s forgiving mercy. (4.) The gospel as distinguished from the law. (5.) Gifts freely bestowed by God; as miracles, prophecy, tongues. (6.) Christian virtues. (7.) The glory hereafter to be revealed. For the Believer in Christ, Grace is the most important substance he can posses. Why? For by Grace thru Faith are ye saved. Grace is the first gift that God delivers to the new convert to Christianity. With out grace we would all be lost. We all as Christians have problems in this life some more than others. Some Christians will go thru this life with no hindrances, sicknesses, illnesses, nor persecutions, Why? For each have been given a measure of Faith, some have High Faith some have medium faith and others have Low Faith. The more you receive the more is expected of you in return. In contrast, the less you receive the less is expected. Let put it in these words. A Person of low Faith [The Weak Christian] will be protected by God for his lack of understanding and strength and the ones that have the higher Faith, these are mostly, but not entirely, the ministers of the Word of God are allowed to be tested on their Faith. The Apostle Paul stated; Act 20:24, But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God. Of the grace of God, Favor, kindness, friendship, forgiveness, & mercy. But none of these things move me. Fire, Flood, Earthquake, Hunger, all these things test the weak and the strong in Christ, persecutions are the most felt hardship in the world today. By the Grace of God is sufficient for all of us to Stand. I see four distinct periods of time for the Christian and the Church and four distinct periods for the Church, according to Grace and Faith. 1. The beginning Church after Jesus returned to the Father, the time of the Apostles and Deciples. At this period of time there was great persecution of the Church by the Jews and Romans. 2. A development time for the growing Church, where little is known, the separation of the Catholic Church and the Prodistent Church. A breaking away from all hindrances to seek out the truth in the Word of God by all men and not Just a Few, 3.The Peaceful Church, these are the times that we have lived in, where grace abounded and revival came to men. Where you could see Baptisms every where, people being saved and Faith flourished. 4. The end time Church. This is the time we live in now. Persecution, Deception, Controversy, Lies, False Religions, False Christ, False Prophecy and the devision of the Churches. Every body wants a different name and doctrine. This was not in the instructions from Jesus. Be Ye One! Rom 3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Being justified freely by his grace! Justified; In theology it means, remission of sin and absolution from guilt and punishment; or an act of free grace by which God pardons the sinner and accepts him as righteous, on account of the atonement of Christ. Romans, 3:24, Would be enough for many, but not to all. God justified us unto Salvation thru the sacrifice of His Son, in whom we believe, for many around the world, just being saved is not enough. We strive to give, to all, the grace that God had showed to us, to the salvation to them. What am I saying? Many a Christian are being persecuted and tested each and every day. So we endure hardships galore, to the testimony of the Grace that God gives to each and everyone that will believe. 1Peter 4:16, Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf. [Note; The word, Christian is only mentioned twice in scripture.] Romans 5:2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. we have access by faith This is access to Grace or the, Favor, kindness, friendship of God that will sustain us in all perils that we endure. Grace is a substance, just as Faith is, that we possess. 1Co 10:30 For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks? Paul was stating,Why am I called evil when I have the friendship, kindness and Favor of God? When Gods Grace means all these things to the believer? The answer again is in scripture. Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:10-12, Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. The grace that you have or will receive from God, does not mean that you will never suffer as a Christian, it only means that He will sustain you thru these troubling times. You may not have all that you want, but His grace, or Favor, will give you all you NEED. Be content with having no shoes, for there are those with no feet, be content with no home, for there are those with no hope, be content with a piece of bread for there are those who have no food, be content with your clothes for there are those that are naked, be content with your sight for there are those that have no eyes, see what I mean by Grace? I am what I am by the Grace of God. Remember what I had said earlier? The more you receive the more is expected of you in return. In contrast, the less you receive the less is expected. Let put it in these words. A Person of low Faith [The Weak Christian] will be protected by God for his lack of understanding and strength and the ones that have the higher Faith, these are mostly, but not entirely, the ministers of the Word of God are allowed to be tested on their Faith. Paul put it this way in 1Co 15:10; But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. We must be content with who we are and the situation that we are placed in, for the Grace of God will sustain us. Not putting your trust in man but in Gods Grace.
