Memories of Mother’s Day Past

By Michaela Scherr Yes, I remember well the cold tinned prawns on my plate with a lone crunchy potato that had been zapped in the microwave, for breakfast. Once there was even a rollmop (German description of a pickled herring fillet) on my plate and a side dish of dill cucumbers. I love German food, except for breakfast. Years ago I loathed pancakes, as a matter of fact they would make me gag, a left over from my childhood when I wasnt allowed to leave the table until everything was eaten, including a soup broth made with pancake pieces ugh! The thought of it still makes me feel squeamish. On this particular Mothers Day my very young daughter decided to make me pancakes for breakfast. The breakfast arrived with great fanfare and I did indeed feel very special. I looked down at the plate and saw the pancake. The pancake was char grilled on one side and soft and runny on the other. It was at this where I felt like a bad mum. I knew this was put together with much love; I simply couldnt eat it. Several Mothers Days later a cake was lovingly baked for me. This cake was so bad it was totally inedible and had to be smuggled into the rubbish bin because not even the dog would eat it. Many years later and a younger brother added, I am pleased to see that nothing has changed in regards to her culinary skills, some things shall always remain constant. Fortunately these days her younger brother bakes delicious cakes. On Mothers Day I have a very patient family. With clenched teeth and drooped shoulders they smile at me when I say How about we go somewhere to eat? What about driving up to the mountains? Sometimes I swear I hear muffled words hissed like pointless, aimless, stress, and be nice to your mother! In recent years, weve driven around the Gold Coast hinterland in Queensland Australia in the futile search for food on Mothers Day. You would think we would have learned our lesson. We walk then drive around for ages to find somewhere or something to eat. Once we discovered a small restaurant hidden away (I know why) so we paid for our buffet lunch only to discover there was next to nothing left. The following Mothers Day we again drove to the Gold Coast without booking a table and so we found ourselves going from restaurant to restaurant in a futile search for somewhere to eat. We settled for takeaway instead. There have also been many Mothers Days spent with breakfasts or lunches along our coastal regions, spending time wandering through art and craft markets, shopping, the movies, or simply spending time hanging out with the family. Sadly these days we are not often together as a family. It will still be a wonderful day spent with my husband and son however my daughter and grandson both live far away in another city in a different State. So today I find myself reflecting on Mothers Days Past and it makes me smile. There are so many fond memories; there has been so much laughter and so much love. Mothers Days are special to me because of the children in my life; they are the tops, I love them and I know they love me. By Thelma Horton Most of us will agree that sewing your own clothes saves you money and brings great satisfaction. It is gratifying when you complete a project and can say that you sewed it yourself. But, perhaps the biggest reason most people do not sew their own clothes is because they look homemade. You start out with visions that the outfit will look exactly on you the way it looked on the pattern envelope, but when its finished it looks like something is missing. And, you cant quite put your finger on what it is. I remember, as a teenager, staying up all night to finish an outfit so I could wear something new the next day for a special event or occasion. Even though I thought I looked cute, people could tell it was homemade, the night before. The only time the iron touched it was when it was finished, and then I really ironed it hard. I didnt know what was missing until I stepped into a home economics sewing class, and saw a bunch of odd looking tools that I did not recognize, or know how to use. What I learned in that sewing class was that the secret to making home sewing not look homemade was in the pressusing those odd looking tools. I didnt know that if I put off pressing the garment until completion, that it would be too late to set in the shape. I didnt know that no matter how well I sewed, the professional look was also a result of proper pressing. Yes, properly pressing seams as you sew actually shapes the garment and sets the stitching lines. As we all know, the body is not flat, it has curves, and using the ironing board alone will not shape the garment properly. The only way to shape your garment is by using the proper pressing equipment along with the ironing board. If you are like me, and most home sewers, before taking a sewing class, you are also unfamiliar with specialized pressing equipment and not accustomed to using them. But, using the proper tools along with the proper pressing and sewing techniques makes the difference in the end result. It helps shape the fabric so it will fit the body more smoothly. Some of those odd looking pressing tools are listed below: Steam iron for pressing and shaping fabric and setting stitches at all stages of construction. Ironing board, well padded and smoothly covered in 100% cotton cover, absorbs moisture from the steam iron. Tailors ham for pressing shaped areas and curved seams. Seam roll, or sleeve roll, for pressing seam allowances open and pressing seams in narrow areas. Clapper for pressing sharp creases without it looking over-pressed. Wooden point presser for pressing corners and points, and pressing straight seams open. Press cloths for protecting the right side of the fabric during pressing. Pressing is different from ironing. When most of us iron, we use a back and forth motion, moving the iron over the fabric. In pressing, the iron is lowered to the place to be pressed, then raised off the fabric, and moved to the next area. Ironing board covers should be 100% cotton because the all-cotton fabric absorbs the moisture so that the fashion fabric will dry quickly. The traditional ironing covers with the reflective surface, actually reflects the steam, and may cause burn damage to some fabrics and slows down the drying process when youre shaping with steam. First, be sure you know the fabric content to determine the proper heat setting for the iron, then follow the techniques below as you sew your garment pieces together. Press curved areas such as darts, hiplines, bustlines and collars over the tailors ham from the wrong side with the point of the dart smoothed flat over the end of the ham to shape their curve. Horizontal darts should be pressed down, and vertical darts should be pressed toward the center of the garment. Curved seams sometimes need to be clipped slightly along the edges so they can be pressed open without puckering. Do not clip any closer to the seam than absolutely necessary to press the seam flat. Be careful not to cut pass the stitched seam. Darts in heavy or bulky fabric will be less bulky if you slash in the middle, and then press open. Be careful not to slash so close to the point that the fabric will pull apart. Press seams open over sleeve or seam roll from the wrong side with the tip of the iron along the stitching line to prevent the seam edges from marking or showing through on the right side. Follow the grain line in the fabric when pressing by moving the iron in the same direction as the lengthwise yarns of the fabric. Pressing across the grain or on the bias can stretch the garment piece out of shape. Following the above pressing and sewing techniques will help you achieve the professional-looking results every home sewer dreams of. The answer: How much does it cost and what kind of retaining wall can I install? Customers and potential customers alike are always amazed about the high cost of landscape design. Cost may not always be about the materials used, but it is always, about the time involved in the design and installation. Labor is the key component of any project and any business. If you doubt me, just call for an estimate on an in-home computer repair. The second question is one that continues to evolve. Not long ago, when a customer wanted a retaining wall installed at their residence, the choice was simple; you get pavers or Windsors. That is certainly not the case today as Windsors are rapidly becoming extinct as the dinosaur. Here are few tips when thinking of installing a retaining wall: 1. Materials: When choosing materials, select the type that is best suited for the desired result. Many long-lasting materials are available for landscape use including flagstone wall rock, Xeriscape rockery, railroad tie maze, regal stone, Pyzique stone, Windsor stone, and framed fence. Also consider recycled concrete paving treated timbers, vertical poles, pre-cast concrete modular units, poured concrete, and brick veneer. 2. Type of wall: The type of wall you choose should be determined by need. Decide if you need a poured-in-place concrete “structural” wall or a much less expensive “dry-laid wall” consisting of stacked, open-joint material. 3. Determine design or on-site placement: Planning ahead will help you avoid the expense and time it takes to relocate a wall or to modify retained areas once they’re installed. 4. Drainage: Most retaining walls fail because of pressure against the wall caused by water or soil-moisture build up behind the wall. All walls should provide for the back-of-wall water to freely drain down and away from the wall. This is accomplished with gravel backfill, or manufactured drainage blankets and drain pipes. Structural walls require “weep” holes to allow water to drain from behind the wall. 5. Foundations: A wall is only as good as its foundation, and all retaining walls should be built on structurally sound, compacted foundation sub-base material. Leveled and compacted earth or gravel fill are acceptable. The foundation material should extend at least one foot beyond the front and back of the base width of the wall. When building dry-laid stone walls, place the largest, most stable stones on the bottom of the wall, and be aware that the base width may need to be as wide as the wall is high. 6. Cant or batter: Walls are more stable and structurally secure if they slope back or “lay back” into the retained slope. This amount of variance from true vertical is called “cant” or “batter”. 7. Anchors: Timber walls and other walls of solid horizontal materials usually have “T” anchors extending back into the slope into undisturbed earth. This helps walls resist pressures that force them forward, or cause them to pivot on footing material. A good rule of thumb is to provide at least one anchor per 16 square feet of exposed wall face. Installed wall costs generally range from $20 to $35 per square foot of wall face for dry-laid materials. Cost will vary considerably depending upon materials used and overall wall height. By Dan Batrams Over the years I have repaired countless pieces of outdoor power equipment including lawnmowers, snowblowers, chainsaws, leaf blowers and more. While a few of these machines have suffered from some very unique and interesting problems, the vast majority have shared just a few common and easily-prevented problems. In this article I’ll cover the most common causes of equipment failure and discuss how they can be avoided. By far the most common problem is the fuel that equipment owners put into their tanks. Gasoline has a surprisingly short shelf life and can degrade in as little as thirty days. Gasoline that has been left in your lawnmower’s fuel tank over the winter will have lost a good deal of its “kick” and can make starting the engine difficult or impossible. Even fuel that has been properly stored will degrade over time. Using a gasoline stabilizer and storing your fuel in a proper container will help to keep your fuel fresh. Fresh fuel helps engines start more easily, increases their power and improves performance. Always read and follow the instructions that came with your equipment, and never store gasoline near sources of heat, sparks or open flames. Another common cause of problems is also fuel-related. Many small hand-held machines such as trimmers, chainsaws and leaf blowers use two-stroke engines. Most two-stroke engines require that a special oil be mixed in with the fuel. This fuel/oil mixture provides lubrication to the critical moving parts of the engine. Unless the mixture is prepared according to the manufacturer’s specifications, severe engine damage can result and is often not covered by the equipment’s warranty. Always read and follow the instructions in your equipment’s owner’s manual. Larger equipment such as lawnmowers and tractors usually have four-stroke engines. Four-stroke engines also require lubrication, but the oil is not mixed with the fuel. Instead the oil is contained in a reservoir separate from the fuel tank. Just like with your car, the engine oil (and filter if present) should be replaced at the intervals suggested by the manufacturer. It is very important to use the correct type of oil for your engine and to maintain the proper oil level.
