Marriage Self Help Books

By Nola Redd I practically dove into marriage self-help books at some point during our engagement, seeking help before any problems arose. Maybe I should have brought one to the wedding. Maybe I shouldn’t have brought one on the honeymoon. Who knows? But even they don’t seem to help us, they help me, and that’s what matters. After reading more books than my husband prefers, I can say with confidence that the general message behind them is the same. The most important rule is the one your mom taught you before a playdate - “Be nice.” They also teach, “Don’t say things in anger.” My personal favorite, of course, is “Don’t yell.” If I don’t yell, what do I should I do with my anger, turn my head into a cartoon volcano with lava flowing out my ears?! Of course, the books teach you how to communicate without yelling, insulting, or speaking profanity next. The material resembles the Psychology 101 course I took in college. “Use ‘I’ statements, not ‘you’ statements.” “Rate your feelings and the importance of the issue on a scale of one to ten.” “No namecalling.” I know all of these things, but I wish I could do a straight download to the brain. Actions may speak louder than words, but both are murder to change. Not only that, but when I start saying in a level voice, “I feel angry because when…” my husband mimcs, “I don’t like it when YOU use those stupid ‘I’ statements!” Well, that ends that discussion. Next comes my favorite line, the infamous, “Go on a date every week once you get married. At least go out once a month.” This worked great when we only had the two of us to worry about. Now we have three small children. Do you know what a babysitter costs? If my husband and I take a limo to eat steak and go to a private screening of a movie, we have still paid the sitter more than we spent going out. Right now, our date budget limits us to dollar movies and Mickey D’s dollar menu. We haven’t figured out how to convince the sitter to go on the dollar plan. Hopefully, we’ll come up with something before our kids turn into teenagers and make the whole point moot. At least then, our oldest daughter can watch her siblings for free. High on the list for building good communication, we learn to turn off the television and talk to each other. And kids are off topic. Once we have exhausted the subject of my husband’s work (I ask “What did you do today?’ and he says, “I went to work.” Try as I may, I can’t squeeze any more out of him), we just sit and stare blankly. Neither of us watch the news, and the joy of email means every time something funny happens, he reads it in his inbox. Yes, of course, we are supposed to have a hobby or something - instead, we had three children in four years (and that’s not a comment on our hobby, by the way, just our luck). So we stare at each other for ten minutes, and then turn on the television. After all this, you would think I would give up on the marriage self-help books. Yet I continue reading them. The reason is simple - they all confirm that men and women speak different languages. Yes, 90% of the world already knows this, but my husband doesn’t. When I tell him I don’t want a solution for the problems I’m having with the kids, he says, “Why are you talking to me then?” Thankfully, the marriage books keep me from decking him, since I realize he is a man with desire to attack problems head-on, while most women other than myself also just want a sympathetic ear. Not only that, but when something upsets me and he can’t figure out why, I take joy in hearing from several sources that the same thing upsets most women, too. His solution of, “Just don’t let it get to you,” is a nice, masculine solution. He can’t help it - he was born that way. So even if you can never manage to wring change, from either yourself or your spouse, a marriage self-help book can make you feel like you are not alone. And when frustration with your husband reaches an all-time high, a nice, heavy marriage self-help book makes a satisfying thud when thrown against the wall. By Margaret Keenan When getting married, the expense of the day can sometimes go through the roof. Accessories for the bride and bridesmaids alone, can be costly. Hair slides in many designs have become widely popular for weddings today, ranging from simple, to way out dramatic. Having them professionally made to your requirements is an easy option but can be very costly. Wedding Hair Dos are not what they used to be - what has changed? Many brides previously used tiaras or a simple flower as their main head piece on their wedding day. This trend though has now changed to more simple wedding accessories. If you wish to create your own bespoke design here are a few tips, taken from when I designed and made my own for my big day: First I visualized what I basically wanted them to look like. I wanted to incorporate feathers and colored stones in the design, which kept in line with my wedding theme. Then I went shopping to my local craft shop. I purchased plain plastic comb slides, gold colored thin decorative ribbon, and some decorative amber colored stones which come on a gold wire. All of these items are available in a wide range of color and design. I also bought fine craft feathers in cream and soft gold, enough to achieve the height I wanted in the headpiece. Firstly, I cut the comb to the size I wanted, glued the first end of ribbon using craft glue to the very edge of the comb, then proceeded to wrap the ribbon through each tooth and around the stem of the comb to cover the revealed plastic. Before you reach the end of the comb place the desired amount of feathers between the entwined ribbon. Make sure you have achieved the final shape desired before gluing down the end of the ribbon to the comb slide. Cut off any access ribbon. Now, using the wired stones, wrap these around the base of the feathers to achieve the final result. Don’t be afraid to play around with this to achieve your desired design. By wrapping the colored stones upon each other a flower shape can be made. Try the comb in your hair to make sure no plastic is showing. I also purchased a plain childs’ hairband and using the same ribbon and stones, created a matching headband for my flower-girl. The stones were also used in my bridesmaid bouquets. It’s amazing what you can do with simple craft items! The simple but elegant design should have you looking like a star of your wedding day. The main types of trout found are brown, cutthroat, brook and my favourite the rainbow. Catching a small trout is not that hard, its catching the big ones where the challenge comes in. Some people prefer fly fishing as a way of catching these fish, others say using a float is best but in the end its whats best for you. Spinners are also known to work for some so just see what works for you. Some of the flies that are on the market do not seem to resemble any fly or insect at all. This is because to a fish it is not the imitation of a fly that matters it is more just a case of food recognition. Fishing line that is used also counts as the heavier the line the easier it is for the fish to see the line and put the fish off.Feeding habits also differ from fish to fish as well as the different water temperatures and time of day. There are many different things to take into account when fishing for trout as to whether you have a good day or a bad day. Since it affects roughly 25% of the population each year, chances are you may know someone who suffers from this terrible illness. The not so good new is helping someone with depression can be frustrating at times. Many depressed people dont want to be helped. They might view it as appearing weak or needy or simply that you are butting into their businessand just snap at you for it. You may have experienced this before and decide: hey thats his problemI got my own issues. But Friend, that is the wrong approach. Not everyone would put up a defense for you to help them out. Many people suffer from depression needlessly all because they wont ask for help. Let them know that you care and just want to make sure that they are okay. Thats usually not true for the average person. Building up resentment toward exercise goes much deeper than just not liking the effort it takes to do it. Resentment brings out a rebellious attitude in us. It is down right maddening that our bodies are aging and we can not do what we used to do! Every say or think that? We feel it and we see it happening right in front of our eyes. Inside, we are like children. We stomp our feet, cross our arms and say, You cant tell me what to do; Ill show you. The sooner you accept the fact that exercise is going to have to be a part of the rest of your life, the more likely you will start the more likely you will continue exercising. Resentment is usually fueled by his cousins: Denial, Pride and Laziness. The best thing to do is never let them play together. Resentment is a form of pride. FAILURE Why should I start exercising? I will not follow throughnever have. It will be just another failure of mine. The only failure is not starting. Success is not measured in numbers. It is measured in your growth through the process. Just because your track record may show some ups and downs has no bearing on your future efforts. Plus, your self-worth is not based on how many times you started an exercise program. Fear of failure is an excuse to never try. PERFECTION Why am I not doing this the way I know I can do this? I might as well not do it at all if I cannot do it right. If you think for one second that you are going to be perfect in sticking to a plan, forget it. Its not possible for anyone. The truth is you will never be perfect. Once you reach a goal, you will have another one. Its a repetitive cycle, like running on a treadmill that will never stop. Perfectionism is an illusion. COMPARISONS Why does Jane look like she does and I have to work so hard at it. It does not seem fair! Life just isnt fair, is it? For some, it seems effortless to look thin and feel healthy. These people may even do the exact workout plan as you and get totally different results than you do. For you, it is a constant trip to the dentists office. You dread it. You know its going to hurt, and it may even cost a lot in the end. You are right that its not fair, but thats life. You need to get beyond this. Comparing yourself to others and your past is a losing battle. EXPECTATIONS Why is it so hard to balance my fitness goals and lifestyle? Unless you have such paralyzing health problems that you cant move, there is NO reason in the world not to get some form of exercise. However, you have to be smart about it and you have to be realistic in what you choose to do. If your expectations are too high, you set yourself up for failure and then begin comparing yourself to others. In some cases, ER sets in before you even start. This is hurtful. Setting expectations that are too high is self-defeating before you even start. Here is what I told them and I will tell you the same - One out of three of you will break a bone. Half of you are on the verge of obesity and diabetes. A third of you will suffer a heart attack. Half of you will end up in a nursing home. And most of you are not living a life filled with confidence, good sleeping patterns, high energy or happiness. Why now? You tell mewhy not now? Do the math! Numbers do not lie. You either accept the road less traveled or you face the consequences. Its just that simple. This may resemble a scare tactic, but the bottom line is this is your reality. If you think for one second you are exempt, above reproach, or just relying on luck or faith, think again. Your best defense is a good offense. Why now? Resenting the need to exercise is a waste of energy. Never starting because you are afraid of failure is a copout. Striving to exercise perfectly is a bit unrealistic for anyone. Comparing your present condition with how you used to be is a losing battle. And setting expectations so high that your lifestyle prevents you from accomplishing anything is a bad attitude ready to happen. Why now? Because these are all just plain excuses. The bottom line is, you will pay the doctor eventually if you allow any of the excuses to get the best of you. The seller’s 3rd trust deed interest and payments will depend upon how it is structured in the course of an offer to purchase between the buyer and seller. Information based on properties purchased in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. FHA loans are given through many lenders and the rules for a new FHA loan are slightly different.
