Amps and Volts: Battery Basics?

Saturday, October 20th, 2007

By Dan Hagopian This is a back to basic articles on understanding a batteries electrical ratings. Let’s take a real question from a real person: “I have a sony clie PEG-NR70V/U PDA. The battery that you show that would fit my unit is 1200 mah and 3.7 volts. On the back of my PDA it says 800 mAh and the volts is 5.2. Is the battery that you show for my unit the same?” This is a great question and is actually quite common and so it is wise that we gain a better understanding of what the ratings mean. All PDA batteries have an electrical specifications that include its volt and milliAmp hour rating. These terms are abbreviated as we see in the following example: 3.7 V, 1600 mAh. Volts - or V - are an electrical measure of energy potential. You can think of it as the pressure being exerted by all the electrons of a PDA Batteries negative terminal as they try to move to the positive terminal. Amps - or A - is an abbreviation of Ampere, a 19th century French scientist who was a pioneer in electricity research. Amps measure the volume of electrons passing through a wire in a one second. One Amp equals 6.25 x 1018 electrons per second. Amp hours - or Ah - measures capacity. That is what is ultimately important to consumers as it is the capacity or amp hours that tells us how long we can expect a battery to deliver a charge before it runs out. As with all metric measurements, Amps can be divided into smaller (or larger) units by adding a prefix, in this case by adding an “m” to the amp hour we are renaming the amp hour to milli amp hour: mAh. In the case of PDA Batteries, a milliAmp hour (mAh) is most commonly used notation system. Note that 1000 mAh is the same a 1 Ah. (Just as 1000mm equals 1 meter.) Note that Amp hours do not dictate the flow of electrons at any given moment, that is the role of volts. PDA batteries with a 1 Amp hour rating could deliver Amp of current for 2 hours, or they could provide 2 Amps of current for hour. Typically, PDA Batteries will use 1 to 3 Amps per hour, depending on the model’s processor speed, screen size, screen brightness adjustment, usage, and other factors. Some of our batteries will have higher amp-hour ratings than the original battery found in your device and will not cause any incompatibilities. It is actually good because you are getting greater capacity. Volts on the other hand have to be within a nominal range (reasonable range) of each other. Manufacturers rate a voltage cell, which then becomes the nominal voltage, historically with a 3.6V while others picked 3.7V to name the cell. The functionality and performance of either cell is identical and cannot be differentiated by the device. The explanation above applies to a single Li-Ion cell in series. When a battery has two or more Li-Ion cells in series, the voltage is multiplied by the number of cells in series. Now back to the question we began with….. “I have a sony clie PEG-NR70V/U PDA. The battery that you show that would fit my unit is 1200 mah and 3.7 volts. On the back of my PDA it says 800 mAh and the volts is 5.2. Is the battery that you show for my unit the same?” To understand the answer to the question let’s look at a math formula for the complete formula of Watts…. Watts = Volts x Amps x k(one unit length of wire) Since the length of your PDA’s wire inside the battery casing is difficult to know (unless you open the casing) let’s just use a more common formula for Watts: (NOTE: DO NOT OPEN YOUR BATTERY’S CASING, EXTREME HARM WILL COME TO YOU) Watts = Volts x Amps Now the orignial Clie battery came with 800 mAh and the volts is 5.2. So the Watts would be: 41.6= 5.2 x 8 The Clie battery on our page is 3.7 V and 1200 mAh. So the Watts would be: 44.4= 3.7 x 12 Remember that I’m 1200 mAh is the same as 12 Ah and 800 mAh is the same as 8 Ah So as we discussed early a nominal range is inherent is voltage ratings and slight variations in voltage generally do not impact the performance of your PDA. We see this all the time with universal and external batteries. The original battery might be specified at 10.8 Volts, but customers using a universal part can operate their laptop safely at either the 10 or 11 Volt setting. Meridian Phone Madness: How to Identify Your Meridian Telephone

Friday, October 19th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Bob_Mrozinski]Bob Mrozinski Meridian means many things to many people. When people tell me they have a Meridian phone, they feel like they have fully identified their product and that our discussion can spring forward from there. Not so. Unfortunately, Nortel and Northern Telecom used ‘Meridian’ across much of their product line. If you have a Northern Telecom or Nortel phone system in your office, it may say Meridian on it. You still need to figure out what the real model number is as well as what system it is running on. Nortel Networks, Nortel and Northern Telecom have made Central Office phone switches that provide phone lines, Centrex, T-1’s, and PRI’s. They also make Norstar and Meridian phone systems for business offices. Identifying your phone is the first thing you need to when you want to expand your system or replace a bad phone. Look at the bottom of the telephone for a model number such as M7324, M7310, M7208, M7100, T7316, T7316e or T7100. Any of these identify it as part of a Norstar phone system. Meridian, Option One and SL-1 PBX’s have phones such as M2008, M2616D, M3901, M3902, M3903, M3904 and M3905. Nortel and Aastra also have Meridian phones. Some of these are M5316, M5208, M5008, M5312, M5216, M5212, M5209, M5112, M5009, M9417CW, M9316CW, M9110, M9116, M9120, M8004, M8009, and M8314. If you don’t find model number, look for the part #. It will almost always begin with NT for Nortel or Northern Telecom or an A if it’s Aastra. This is followed by several more alphanumeric characters. Remember, Meridian labelled phones may be on a Norstar system, a Meridian PBX or as part of your Centrex. I hope this helps you identify your Meridian phone. Why LASIK and Other Vision Correction Surgeries May Not Be Right For You

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

By Jerry Baker There are many ways to correct one’s vision these days, but surgery is not always an option for everyone. Certain health conditions, hormonal imbalances, and things of that nature can make particular surgeries more complicated, or can change how the procedures affect one’s eyes.Health conditions such as diabetes, anything requiring the use of steroids or other drug that may slow the healing process or any autoimmune disorders can make you an unlikely candidate for surgeries like LASIK. It is also important to have at least one or two years with a steady prescription — no decrease in visibility or change in the strength of one’s glasses or contacts — before it is advisable to proceed with surgery. If a patient is pregnant, nursing, or planning to be pregnant in the near future, it is advised to wait until the hormones associated with the body change level out and go back to their normal states. The hormone shift can sometimes cause a change in the shape of the corneas. Eye disease such as glaucoma can also make the chances of vision correction significantly slimmer. With one’s eyes in particular, if vision is too severely impaired, or a cornea is too irregularly shaped, it can make correctional surgery difficult, and therefore is inadvisable. The FDA has limits on approving surgery on those with severe myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism; though custom LASIK has been able to help a wider range of people with a greater range of irregularities. In the case of people with chronic dry eyes, surgery is inadvisable until the problem is corrected. Without enough moisture in and around the eye, healing after surgery can be complicated, especially considering the rubbing, itchy, or stinging eyes. With this problem, post-surgery can damage any progress made. Having an irregular corneal shape can also result in an inability to be worked on. The same is true for people with pupils deemed to be “too large.” If the pupil is larger than a certain diameter, the area to be worked on will not fit within the reasonable limits of the treatment. In some cases, irregularities fit within a certain area of acceptable difference and can be worked with. In others, allowing treatment despite a patient having severe irregularities and certain diseases makes the risk complications much more likely. The best course of action is to make sure your doctor performs a thorough examination and let your doctor know if you have health conditions that are known to cause shifts in hormones or slow or impair your immune system. Jerry Baker is not afraid to tell the truth. If you are considering LASIK or laser eye surgery, you owe it to yourself to be fully informed. The Dangers of Belly Fat and How to Lose It

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

By Bryan Downey Having too much belly fat is linked with serious diseases, such as heart disease, and diabetes. Studies show belly fat is extra bad for you but researchers are still investigating the exact reason why deep belly fat is so hazardous to one’s health. According to government researchers, the link between stress, tension, and excess belly fat is known as the Metabolic Syndrome. The culprit that causes this condition is insulin resistance and until this problem is corrected belly fat is likely to persist. Belly fat is now believed to be the main underlying cause of chronic inflammation. Losing belly fat is actually much more serious than not looking good in your clothing or swimming suit. Belly fat is a stored energy and the most noticeable form of belly fat is subcutaneous, showing up as love handles and belly rolls. People think that the stubborn belly fat is the problem, when in fact; controlling the fat is the problem. The first thing you must understand about how to effectively reduce belly fat is that there is no magic bullet when it comes to weight loss. The best way to rid belly fat is a synergy of these four elements: diet, cardio, resistance training and targeted abdominal exercises. The muffin top, the spare tire around the middle, that midriff bulge — no matter what you call it, belly fat is hard to lose. So, the question remains, how do you effectively reduce belly fat? I am not going to lie to you folks, banishing belly fat is tough. If you want to lose belly fat then you most modify your diet and incorporate exercise so you can lose stomach fat in a short amount of time. Another way to fight belly fat is find effective ways to lower your stress levels while exercising more and eating slightly less. Lowering stress will control cortisol production, thereby helping to significantly reduce belly fat. Strength training uses up cortisol which helps reduce belly fat and curb your appetite. Eating foods that have omega-3 fats are shown to reduce stress. Broil, bake or grill fish to lower levels of PCBs and dioxins. Eliminating white sugar and flour may also help reduce that “mid-life” belly fat that creeps onto many of us. Quickly learn how to calculate how many calories a day you need to lose. You can monitor your belly fat by using a caliper. A caliper will measure your body fat so you can track belly fat loss around the abdominals. Exercise may be a more effective way to lose belly fat than diet alone, according to a new study from Wake Forest University. However exercise alone may not be enough for some people to burn belly fat off. Diet is a very important factor and here are some points to keep in mind when trying to lose belly fat: Consume less sugar Consume less processed foods Consume less sodium If you manage to lose just 5 to 10 percent of your overall body weight, you can reduce the hazardous layer of belly fat by as much as 30 percent. Did you find this information on belly fat useful? If so you can learn a lot more about losing body fat here:http://www.fitness-4life.com Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Bryan_Downey http://EzineArticles.com/?The-Dangers-of-Belly-Fat-and-How-to-Lose-It&id=347548 buy tramadol online order cheap tramadol online canadian pharmacy tramadol generic for ultram

What You Must Know Before Sending Troop Gifts, Gift Baskets, and Care Packages — All Year ‘Round

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

By Helen Hecker Our deployed troop members lack many necessities and can use hard-to-get items for ‘bargaining chips’ to get what they do need. It’s important to know what our troops need or don’t need, whether to send troops gifts in a box or gift basket and how to prepare and ship packages properly. Members of our troops get more than the usual number of gift packages during the holidays but need to be remembered throughout the year. There are many items they need for both personal use and ‘bargaining chips, Most people aren’t aware of the fact that our deployed servicemen and women can use many items just to trade for what they need. The most powerful sought after ‘bargaining chip’ is Copenhagen Snuff & Chew in a tin. Sending ten tins of this hard-to-get item is highly recommended. A large percentage of the infantry ‘dips’ snuff and particularly ‘Hagen’ is coveted. The snuff they receive comes in a plastic container and tastes terrible, report many troop members. Sending tins of snuff is not meant to encourage an unhealthy habit but to use for bargaining purposes. Other items of importance for both personal use and bargaining include: pre-paid phone cards, zipper-style plastic freezer bags in assorted sizes, eye wash and eye drops for flushing sand, dust and other particles out of the eyes, AA-cell batteries, disposable razors, toothbrushes, toothpaste, chewing gum, Avon Skin So Soft Original Bath Oil Spray for removing face paint and possible mosquito repellant, powdered energy electrolyte replacement drinks, Atomic FireBall or Jolly Rancher candy, seasoning salt, shelled peanuts, shelled sunflower seeds, TABASCO or Trappeys Red Devil Cayenne Pepper Sauce, beef jerky or the foot-long Slim Jims, energy bars, and baby wipes in packets, not in tubs, for taking field baths. Items NOT to send include: anything that melts, like chocolate, except M&M’S, waterless hand cleaner or sanitizers (make mud - send only baby wipes in the packets instead), flashlights (can’t use due to ‘visible light’ discipline restrictions), compass (they already have), sunscreen (they have plenty), liquor or pornography. Shipping of the items should be done carefully. As gift basket experts weve come to know that a gift basket is a great idea, but a basket may not always be useful to our servicemen and women either. You have to carefully think about what they really need. The items I listed above can be arranged and nested in a box to mimic a gift basket arrangement. You need a sturdy box, pack the items carefully, seal well with packing tape, consider the weight when choosing items and make sure you have the correct address. The U. S. Department of Defense urges “……the general public not to send unsolicited mail, care packages or donations to service members ‘forward deployed’ unless you’re a family member, loved one or personal friend.” Donating money to an appropriate charity that can best dispense the important items, is recommended instead. Our ‘forward deployed’ troop members can use gifts of hard-to-get personal necessities and ‘bargaining chips’ any time of the year. And knowing the ins and outs will save you a lot of returned packages and grief. The History Of The Electric Toy Train

Saturday, October 13th, 2007

By Paul Wonning Toy trains have been an important part of Americana for a hundred years. Toy trains are a unifying factor, as it seems almost everyone had one as a child. For most of us toy trains have been an important part of growing up. After all who can forget the magic and excitement of the lights and sounds of your first toy train. Children and adults alike are fascinated by the lights, sounds, and motions of a neat toy train layout. But what about the history of the toy train? How did they become so treasured? To understand the fascination with trains you have to understand how important they were to a young and growing nation. The steam locomotive was developed in the early 19th century in England. By the late 1820’s, trains were introduced to this nation. This was an important time in our history - the nation was beginning to expand westward. The nation needed to transport people, agricultural products, minerals, and manufactured goods. Roads were poor, muddy in wet weather, very dusty in dry. Rivers didn’t always go where they were needed and were subject to the vagaries of flood and drought. Canals were expensive to build, and weren’t suitable for all terrain. The steam locomotive was the perfect solution to the nation’s transportation problem. Its fuel - wood and water - was locally abundant in all areas. Track could be constructed in just about any terrain. The train rapidly became the primary transportation system in the country. Trains hauled freight, livestock, people, and mail. Trains helped settle the nation. An important turning point in this nations history occurred in 1876 at Promontory Point, Utah with the driving of the Golden Spike. Trains truly united the nation, as now a person could travel the vast distance from Atlantic to the Pacific in a few days, as opposed to the weeks, if not months needed for horse transportation. Toy trains had their roots in the real trains which had become so important to the country. The first toy trains were simple wooden carved trains designed to be pulled along the floor with a rope. Many of these were homemade, as local craftsman capitalized on the desire for toy trains. Manufacturers soon began making these trains out of metal. Because metals can show greater detail than wood, these little trains were more realistic than their wood counterparts. These types of trains are still popular for very young children. The locomotive was developed in Europe, and the train had become just as important there as it was here. By the end of the 19th century, German clockmakers began applying their craft to the art of toymaking. The first toy trains to run around the track under their own power, just like the real thing, were wind-up trains built by these German craftsmen. Because of this heritage, wind up trains and other toys are still referred to as ‘clockwork toys’. Wind-up trains can still be purchased, and are still fun to run. The first electric toy trains appeared around 1899/1900 and were also probably German in origin. Because few homes had electricity at this time, these trains were battery powered. The ‘wet cell’ battery in use at the time was messy and dangerous, but the trains were still popular. Joshua Lionel Cowen - a name most people will recall- was the first documented American to build an electric toy train. The year was 1901, and he built it for use by merchants as an animated store window display. It was a simple train - a motorized gondola car. When he noticed people playing with the thing, he realized its potential, and as they say “A star was born.” . Few inventions have had as much impact on the history of a nation, or the world, as the locomotive had. Without it, our world would be a much different place. Toy trains have formed an important part of this world. The magic of toy trains as they wind through miniature villages and countrysides act as a time machine, transporting us back to a simpler time. The fun of building a layout and running the trains is a timeless pleasure, fun for young and old alike. Paul Wonning is the owner of THC Toys, Hobbies and Crafts.com. Turn Marketing Research Into Lead Generation and Public Relations Gold

Friday, October 12th, 2007

By Jonathan Kranz Marketing research isnt just a way to collect opinions, measure awareness or test positioning statements any more. Packaged correctly, your research itself can be your message. You can turn your results into media stories that attract favorable publicity and establish you or your business as an authority. Or you can craft compelling premiums reports, guides or booklets with must-have information that generates leads. Case in point: I worked with an agency that promised its client, a software provider in the mergers and acquisitions field, 500 qualified leads for its sales team. The entire campaign, from print ads and direct mail to e-mails and telemarketing was built around a booklet of insights on how to do better deals. The substance of the book came from one-on-one interviews with the client and its customers. The offer worked: we ultimately pulled at least 1,200 qualified leads, more than doubling the clients expectations. Another case: One my other clients, a franchise marketing agency in New Jersey, initiated research to poll franchise executives regarding agencies and agency relationships. But the interviews proved deeper and richer than they had anticipated, yielding a wealth of insights on franchise marketing and franchisor-franchisee communications. The resulting report has become the foundation for a press campaign and a major component of the agencys branding and lead-generation efforts, which are pulling in clients as I write. I talked to Rich Higginson, president of The Princeton Research Group, the firm that executed the research on behalf of the franchise marketing agency. We put our brains together and came up with a few pointers on who should leverage research and how they should go about it. Who can package research to their advantage? Businesses with big brain capital: Think professional services and consulting firms. Or industries such as financial services, insurance or healthcare. Here, knowledge is money. Any insights you can provide on how customers think, feel, hope and fear has an immediate value your clients will appreciate. Non-profit organizations: In any major fundraising campaign, the real money comes from a handful of big contributors. But before the big players pony up, they want evidence that the need is real, the goal desirable and the organization effective. A third-party report based on objective data can be the story you need to win over major contributors.Political organizers: Gathering support for a referendum, such as a tax override, can be tough work. But you can soften the ground by distributing research that lets voters know what their neighbors are thinking. Likewise, incumbent parties can package data regarding constituent desires what voters said they want from their government with facts on how the government has responded to their concerns. What do you do with the research youve gathered? Pepper your press releases: Reporters are often too busy to conduct deep investigations on their own. Thats why editors really appreciate press releases loaded with fresh, objective information that can form the core of new stories. Example: In a survey of leading American textile manufacturers, 85% believe that competition from China will cripple the nations textile industry in the next five years. Or: Consumer surveys indicate that CD music sales still run strong in the 50+ crowd.Share it in your own bylined articles: Consultants and other service providers looking to establish thought leadership are always eager for ideas on which they can build bylined articles. One good research study can become fodder for a half-dozen substantive articles based on the data youve gathered. These may be placed in industry-relevant publications. Or you can bypass traditional media and distribute your articles online through a syndication site such as EzineArticles.com. Put together a premium to attract leads: Its one of the perennial problems of business-to-business marketing: how do you get the attention of the big decision-makers and top executives you must persuade to make the sale? Heres your ace-in-the-hole: theyre hungry for information. They want to know what the markets up to; what their competitors are doing; what their colleagues think; what their customers desire. Consider packaging your research into white papers, reports or guides you can use as offers in a lead-gen campaign: Call today for our free guide, 8 Things You Must Do to Engage Hispanic Consumers. These same reports make excellent downloads from your website (in exchange for basic contact information, of course). What else do you have to know? Keep your strategic information to yourself: You dont need to (and should not) give everything away. Any specific information you uncover that gives you an advantage over your direct competitors and would likewise help your competitors if they should get their hands on it you should keep to yourself. Its not that expensive: Some people balk at the cost of research. But think about it whats a few thousand dollars to survey a few hundred people? For the amount of money youd spend on a modest media buy (and for a short period at that), you could gain raw material for articles, press releases, premium guides, Web content, direct mail, e-newsletters and more. In the greater marketing context, the right marketing research is a downright bargain. The Web is changing everything: Back in the old days (meaning: just a few years ago) your opportunities to disseminate information were limited to your influence with the media. But the Web has evolved into an extraordinary messaging platform that often leaves the traditional media players behind. Think of whats available now to help you distribute your information: blogs, e-newsletters, virtual networks and communities, press release syndication sites, article syndication sites, e-book downloads, Web-specific publishing sites. These and other online mediums can help you get the word out. And through the power of hyperlinks and search engine robots, your word can spread must faster in bits and bytes than it would in ink or broadcast signals. Make research part of your messageBefore you begin your next big PR or marketing campaign, think about conducting research first not simply as a guide for your campaign, but as the very substance of your offers, your message, your brand. Because the best way to rise above the clutter is to give your prospects something better than more clutter honest-to-goodness information and insight they can really use. How to Attract Women

By Kadence Buchanan It is unbelievable how many men there are who are awe-struck when it comes to approaching and talking to women. But what I find really appalling is the fact that so many of them are laboring under some unfounded illusions about women that prevent them from making any move whatsoever. Let’s examine some of these misconceptions. Many men believe that, to be attractive, they have to conform to what women say and want. That’s one sure way to intimidate yourself. Women usually say they prefer men who are tall, dark, handsome, intelligent, rich, athletically built. The truth is, women don’t really know what they want until they see it. They only think this is what they want probably because this is what they’ve seen in their favorite movies or on TV. Most women will be charmed off their feet by men who are smart, charming, funny and good conversationalists. Another wrong belief is that, to attract women, you have to like what they like and are interested in the things they enjoy. Some men actually pretend to like things that women like, hoping they can create some interest. Nothing could be further from the truth. Whether or not men share the same interests with women is secondary in the realm of attraction and romance. In fact, many women are attracted to men who are their virtual opposites in terms of personality and interests. This is important to point out because some men actually go out of their way to pretend to like the things that the woman they are attracted to likes, which is pathetic and unnecessary. Even men who are fairly capable of attracting women still have trouble when it comes to sex, mainly because of the misguided belief that women will only sleep with them after they have gone through great and elaborate lengths of courting them. The truth is women, being human beings just like men, have the same needs and desires that we do. And that includes sex. They enjoy sex just like we do. A little experience in this area will convince them that this is true. Usually, women hold off from sleeping with men in order to avoid appearing easy or slutty. It is not because they don’t want to. A final misconception among men is that if they aren’t any good at dealing with women, they aren’t going to get any better. This is not true. Men usually believe this after years of fear rejection. The fact is that they are unsuccessful with women because they have approached women on the basis of misconceptions. Sometimes they have failed because they lack confidence and women can smell this like sharks smelling blood. But once these men learn to overcome their basic misconceptions, they can approach women with confidence and their fortunes will surely improve.
